Eliminate Passwords & Legacy 2FA Technology

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

What is MFA?

Multifactor authentication (MFA) is a security system that requires more than one method of authentication from independent categories of credentials to verify the user’s identity for a login or other transaction.

The goal of MFA is to create a layered defence and make it more difficult for an unauthorized person to access a target such as a physical location, computing device, network or database. If one factor is compromised or broken, the attacker still has at least one more barrier to breach before successfully breaking into the target.

The Rise of MFA

MFA

In the past, MFA systems typically relied upon two-factor authentication (2FA), this typically compromised of a OTP (One Time Password) to complement the users password. The logic being, that if a password was compromised, the OTP solution provided additional level of security. However, these solutions delivered questionable levels of security and added significant levels for friction to users, who were now required to remember a password, a PIN that was associated to the OTP solution and the solution delivering the OTP itself, this could be physical token, virtual application, SMS or phone call.

MFA is often mandated in many regulated industries, however the biggest obstacle for 2FA use, was 2FA was often redundant if the user could not remember their password. Unfortunately, the age old problem of increased security at the expense of user experience.
